Chapter Ten

Arthur

"That's a date, then," Leo said, wiping his hands on his jeans over his knees. "It shouldn't be hard for me to gather some of the kids up. They'll love missing school for a bit. Though, when she is comfortable, I'd love for Harlow to attend our preschool."

"It isn't in Morningwood?" I asked, my palms sweating from nerves. Leo was very much a take-charge personality, and while I'd decided I had no need to fear him, that didn't mean he wasn't overwhelming. I kept looking at the door waiting for Aries to pop up again, except just the fact that I was doing that was a problem. Moving in with Leo and his people would be the perfect thing for Aries because then he would be rid of us. Though, if I didn't decide to do as Leo suggested, then Harlow and I would be on our way.

And Leo had made it clear that he was doing just that, suggesting, offering. He wouldn't force my hand, which was the only reason I was still contemplating the idea.

"We send our older children down to primary school in the city, but Ms. Springs does an amazing job at her in-home preschool. She develops her own curriculum and provides each parent with a copy encouraging them to offer their input. Her lessons always center on allowing the children to come to their own conclusions, exploring and making connections both in nature and in more academic fields. We're lucky to have her. Maybe I'll ask her to come down as well so you can meet her and—"

"Just the playdate is fine for now," I told him. Leo had the type of personality that would easily overshadow my own if I let it. I stood, and he followed. "Maybe we should check on—"

In another part of the house, I heard a crash, like something large falling. I ran out of the room and to the noise. "Harlow? Aries?" I called out, immediate panic coloring my words. Leo surged forward, taking the position in front of me.

When we turned the corner to Harlow's room, I skidded to a stop. There was a chair that had been knocked over, but beside it were Aries and Harlow. Aries was on his knees facing away from Harlow. He had Harlow's pink cowboy hat perched on the top of his head since it was too small to fit properly. Harlow stood behind him carrying a length of yarn that she was using as pretend cuffs.

"To jail," she told him firmly. Her little eyebrows lowered into a straight, determined line.

"No, please, Sheriff Harlow. I didn't do anything wrong!" Aries cried out, pretending to be distressed.

"Jail, now!"

I smiled, knowing this game well. There was no talking your way out of the short arm of Harlow's law. It didn't matter if you didn't even do anything—Harlow would put you in jail. Or forget what she was doing and invite you to a tea party instead. Except only I had ever been on the other side of her cuffs and table.
